From Acclaim to Fury: Right-wing Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.
Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the censorship process.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in photographs have their identities obscured.
But some do not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was comparatively muted after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the files' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that included no new data.
