A Significant Milestone as Rosenior Breaks Boundaries

"Liam Rosenior is a quality manager who understands football inside out, and that's the most important thing.

"But, as the Blues' first African heritage footballer, it would be dishonest if I said this news doesn't move me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by the former Chelsea winger, the man who earned his historic debut for Chelsea's senior side off the bench in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea named RC Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, 41, as their next head coach following the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of a multi-club ownership group which also controls Chelsea.

Statistics show only 12 black head coaches – not including individuals holding interim roles – in England's top flight since it began thirty-four years ago.

"What really strikes me about Liam is he was raised and developed his game not far from here, he understands the local fans," continued Canoville.

"When children observe someone like Liam managing the team they support, a person who looks like them, who's from their ends, who comes from a household that champions equality… that's impactful and shows them the path is there.

"Indeed, it is an enormous moment for the club, for the capital, for every young person dreaming big.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, give him what he needs, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Does the Statistics Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' head coach back in the nineties thereby becoming the Premier League's first African heritage manager.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering black English boss in the top flight when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo is the sole additional current top flight boss from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers across the English game is matched by an absence of diversity in the boardroom.

According to a BFP 2023's study, forty-three percent of top-flight players come from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

Yet, analysis from the equality organization revealed only 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership management teams across most Premier League clubs are from ethnically diverse communities.

At first-team coaching positions, based on data provided by eleven clubs, the percentage stands at 2%.

Across all coaching roles – encompassing senior roles – from those same eleven clubs, the statistic is 5%.

"He has undoubtedly broken barriers in terms of his appointment as a the Chelsea head coach, and we hope to witness more such appointments," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know there is loads of ability present in the black and underrepresented groups... they want the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. It is imperative to persist in striving to dismantle those barriers down."

Furthermore, Rosenior is set to become one of only four permanent British head coaches presently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that trails the continent's other major leagues regarding national representation.

Sixteen out of twenty first division managers in Italy are from Italy, Eleven in La Liga are Spanish, 12 in the Bundesliga are German and 10 of the 18 are French.

Current Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt every young English managers with a youth development pedigree will be, to some degree regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It's really motivating for young English academy coaches to see someone land such a role with that profile and everyone hopes he will be highly successful."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is based on talent'

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, had a career with the likes of West London clubs, the Hammers as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career culminating in a five-month stint at the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered in combating discrimination in football and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he pursued a path in management. He started penning articles for The Guardian, and in one piece he acknowledged the under-representation among managers. He pointed out that race does not influence ability arguing that roles should be given based on qualification.

He further expressed a point he has often stated: how significant under-representation leads to a failure to understand regarding footballers with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" or "passionate", noting that he understood the Dutch international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to join him in moving from France to West London this summer.

In further newspaper articles, he also confessed to being "embarrassed" to hear an unnamed coach utter a homophobic slur. He pledged his support for the Rainbow Laces campaign and wrote a public message to the former US President while he was in office, accusing him of "overt" racism.

Rosenior has since built his reputation as a manager – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term contract at Chelsea.

The Blues boasted the top flight's first black boss in Gullit as well as the first black captain in Paul Elliott.
